UNA provides unique opportunities. It is that community based school, so you are going to get those internships, you are going to get the networking factor that you might be looking for. I know that sometimes people think of UNA as a regional school and don't really consider everything that it has to offer. But it can provide you the same opportunities as the big state schools, whether it be the internships, the research.
So we actually went out to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and conducted research from one of my favorite television shows, Breaking Bad. We were able to go and map out the most popular filming sites and locations, gather data from that, and I was able to present it at a conference in Reno, Nevada. I would recommend study abroad to other students because whenever you do get out of your comfort zone or go to another country, you learn so much more about the other culture. My goal was to learn another language. I was able to do that tenfold by going to Peru and to Spain, and I really was able to improve my Spanish skills.
Currently I am in the Honors College, and I'm on the Pre-Med track. So in order to get into Med school, you have to have shadowing hours, and the Honors College has helped me get those shadowing opportunities. Basically all you have to do is go and talk with the Honors College and just tell them that you're interested in shadowing, and they will get you with the hospital and with the doctor to shadow to get those hours. It's a great environment because there's a lot of students and professors who are standing behind you, and all they want to do is see you succeed.
